Student Center will become first in the nation to achieve a LEED Platinum standard
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum status recognises designs and buildings that incorporate green initiatives, promote sustainability, and leave small carbon footprints on the environment.
This $40m Student Center for the University of the District of Columbia, part of the historic and comprehensive renovation of Washington, DC’s only public university, will be the first student center in the United States to achieve the highest possible rating for sustainable construction.
"We are proud to lead the movement in sustainable construction and set the standard for green initiatives in architecture and design. The UDC Student Center will serve as a model for campuses across the country," said Michael Marshall, architect of Marshall Moya Design (MMD) partnered with Cannon Design for the UDC Student Center. Marshall Moya Design and Cannon Design completed the design phase of the student center in the summer of 2011, designing the iconic building sensitive to its urban context and environment.
Key architectural features of the building that will improve its sustainability include a green roof, a rain garden and bio-retention facilities that will mitigate the amount of water used and monitor the quality of water retained.
On Saturday October 22nd at the 2011 National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA) Design Awards, Marshall Moya Design was bestowed the Professional Design Excellence Award for the firm’s design of the New Student Center at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC).
Once completed, the student center will provide a host of services for UDC students, including food and financial services, study and meeting halls, and entertainment venues.
