schmidt hammer lassen designs the Tian Yi Town district in China

The district will be constructed as three interconnecting islands in a low-lying wetland area between blue canals and submerged rice paddies. The water will be brought right in between the individual developments to give residents proximity to the water as well as indirect lighting from reflections in the water and natural cooling of all public buildings. The entire new district is based on local wind studies and sun position studies, resulting in a poetic, “wave-shaped” town plan. The master plan is the first of a total of three phases which, combined, will create Tian Yi Town. schmidt hammer lassen’s plan includes a mixed-usage district with homes, shops, public administration, children’s institutions, etc. One of the underlying principles is to provide all the day-to-day functions required by the 21,000-plus residents of this phase of Tian Yi Town within a radius of just five minutes’ walk. This will minimise the need for car traffic in the town, making it possible to construct large parts of the district centre as proper pedestrian and cyclist zones. The Tian Yi Town master plan is being developed for the client Sunshine 100 in collaboration with the London-based sustainability consultants of the WSP GROUP and the Danish company PK3 landscape architects.
