Plans for spiralling Sewage Treatment Plant in Sandanski presented by Studio ATM
Sewage treatment plant (STP) Sandanski is located in the industrial zone of Sandanski city, Bulgaria. Different from the traditional sewage treatment plants, which focus on elementary displacement of the technological units over vast plot area, the purpose of the present project is to interpret the flow of technological process in innovative architectural design.
Therefore the design focuses on the vertical and horizontal trajectory of the purifying water and its impact on the environment landscape. The building consists of two inscribed cylinders differing in height, slope and geometrical design. The inner cylinder houses the main treatment units for mechanical treatment and biological reservoirs.
In the outer cylinder are located secondary technological units, storages, supply rooms and administration areas. Therefore the inner cylinder is defined by rigorous geometry which grows along the vertical axis and the outer one is with spiral growth and open gallery with 'tree-like' façade grid.
The plot is located in an environment with changing terrain, rivers, industrial areas and an international railway road. Therefore the building design tries to transform the adjacent landscape and serves as landmark municipality project.
