An exciting shortlisted scheme for the RIAS Saltcoats Apartments Competition on the west coast of Scotland. Occupying a prestigious location on the Ayrshire coastline, the concept boldly challenges the spatial imperfections of this gateway site whilst respecting the adjacent urban fabric behind the gates. The sculptural form smoothly follows the line of the buildings along the street edge, then accelerates as it turns and launches itself towards the town – its figure becoming captured in this inspiring coastline landmark.
Tall silhouettes of the envelope, queuing one next to each other, orientate the majority of the apartments towards the magnificent coastline panorama. This stepping footprint, massing and building orientation creates a range of apartment types and prices, whilst still permitting an element of modularisation and prefabrication. The scheme also incorporates a number of sustainable features that allow the development to deliver excellent environmental ratings set within a backdrop of commercial reality.
