AGVAR completes new residential block across the river from Gehry's Guggenheim
The site of this new residential project is in an area of Bilbao, Spain, close to the University of Deusto, across the river from the refurbished area of Abandoibarra, where the Guggenheim Museum and other architectural icons are situated.
A set of old residential buildings had to be demolished, close to the railway lines. The main difficulty while construction was the maintenance of access to existing buildings and the later rehousing in the new building of 14 families. The site is in the corner of 2 formerly narrow streets. The architects have now turned this into an area of rest where the neighbourhood can enjoy a wide open space.
The new 7 storey residential building has been built with stone ventilated façade from the Valladolid area. The exterior image combines modern architecture with calm lines and colours. The same exterior treatment has been given to the interior courtyard, where special emphasis has been given to maintaining the harmony of the facade. The patio is as important as the main façade; a tranquil space where residents can relax.
