Award Entry

Aamer Architects demonstrate the future of sustainable living in the tropics

The house sits on Siglap Hill, the highest point in a residential suburb in the eastern part of Singapore. The client is a bachelor with an entertaining lifestyle.

As the highest point, the site is breezy and enjoys spectacular views of the surrounding low-lying neighbourhood and distant city skyline. Hence, the public spaces, living, dining and open kitchen are elevated to the second floor and surrounded by deep shady outdoor verandahs that link the spaces and provide extended areas for social events. The third level is dedicated to the master bedroom with a study, a large wardrobe, a bathroom with a steam room and a TV room surrounded by roof gardens.

In contrast to the openness of the upper levels, the front entrance at the ground level appears subdued. Tucked between blank walls, the main door opens to a visual surprise of a curvilinear pool and open terrace anchored by a steel drum housing a pantry and powder/shower room. Two ‘cabana' style guest rooms enjoy direct contact with the swimming pool with deep bed-size decks for lazy afternoons.

To accentuate the form, the palette of materials is kept simple with white plastered walls and granite and timber for floors. Decorative mosaics highlight the bathrooms while the pool uses special light absorbing mosaic tiles that glow after dark. Air conditioning usage is minimised as the house can be kept open even during hot or rainy days.
