Sparch Architects unveil final phase of master plan with 13-storey residential tower
3Mu is the final phase of the Butterfly District Master Plan designed by Sparch, which regenerates a collection of existing warehouse buildings into a bustling creative business district in the centre of Zhongshan City in southern China. The client's company trademark, the ‘Butterfly', is also the symbol for the transformation.
The regeneration completed under the initial phases created a residential demand to which 3Mu responded, complementing the mix of functions - Work, Leisure and Living - at one convenient location. 3Mu derives its name from the traditional Chinese unit of measurement (1 Mu = 667 sqm) which remains in popular use today.
Lying at the east end of the main pedestrian thoroughfare, the 3Mu site creatively responds to the space constraints of inner city life; a podium shaped like a butterfly encloses two levels of retail shops and F & B; the butterfly wings extend from ground level to allow people to move up to an elevated public park with vista views over the surrounding pedestrian streets. Above the lush podium park strides a 13-storey residential tower.
The 3Mu residential tower is a Tetris composition of apartment types ranging from affordable firstbuy one and two-bedroom apartments, to luxurious three and four-bedroom double-height 'Sky Villas' with spiral stairs that connect living and bedrooms to exterior terraces which open up to generous double-aspect views.
The composition exposes a cascade of garden terraces with views towards the mountains to the south on the outskirts of the City. The perforated exterior enhances natural cross ventilation and visually aerates the tower, exposing layers of colour within.
The detail design by Sparch has been completed and construction is slated to start on site in first quarter of 2012.
