We will look back on these days of excess and wonder what we were thinking. The obvious question is why? In a country where the poverty is massive and the infrastructure needs are so great, why such a “let them eat cake” solution to such a simple problem. This a design where ego over came common sense. I hope that they got paid up front, it will never be built.

Swirling ramps form basis of JDS's competition entry for Bike City in Chongming

This spiralling ‘city’ is the competition entry from young design studio JDS. The Chongming Bicycle Park consists of a Bike Museum, a Visitor Center, and a Multi-purpose hall, creating an urban oasis in the vicinity of Shanghai.

In accordance with its position on the site and the programme it accommodates, the Visitor Center must be seen as an entry landmark, acting not only as a symbol for the Bicycle Park, but in line with its function as main access and information point.

The Visitor Center represents and at the same time characterises the relationship between sport, technology, social awareness, recreation and the evolution of biking in a strong gesture.

The Bike museum will be the flagship of the park. It will function as a double helix. Bikes can be used for the ride downwards, on the exterior part of the helix. The multi-purpose hall is seen as a hilly island.
