Vancouver Convention Center expands with LMN

When the city of Vancouver, Canada was losing convention business hand over fist to other cities because its Convention Center built in 1987 was deemed too small, it took immediate action to remedy the situation by launching a major expansion project, led by Seattle based LMN Architects with Downs Archambault Partners and The Musson Cattel Mackey Parternship.

The project will triple the size of the existing convention center and is expected to generate an additional $107 million annually in delegate spending. Built over the land and water on some 1000 piles, the floor-to-ceiling glass walled structure will provide stunning views of the harbour while housing 1 million square feet of convention space, 90,000 sq ft of retail space, and 300,000 sq ft of walkways, bikeways, and public open space. The building, which will feature a 5.5 acre green roof, the largest in Canada, and a water reuse system that will generate much of its own needs, is targeted as a LEED Gold facility.

The expansion will be completed in Spring 2009 in time to serve as the 2010 Olympic Games Media and Broadcast Center.
