Slick linear extrusion with floating roof cantilevers over cliff face

The brief was to design a dramatic and memorable house in Camps Bay, one of the most sought-after residential coastline areas in Cape Town, South Africa.

The unusually linear site of 50m x 20m was key in informing the design. The transparent living spaces at the narrower north end (sunny side) of the house open onto cantilevering terraces and take full advantage of the dramatic views of Camps Bay and Lion's Head.

The signature cantilevered roof with its substantial cutout over the upper deck frames the peak of Lion's Head from inside the Lounge and energizes this outside space without limiting sun penetration. The bedrooms are arranged along the western flank of the house facing the meandering Atlantic coastline.

The linear circulation space connects these rooms and is enhanced by a long water feature, a dramatic staircase and clerestory windows facing the magnificent 12 Apostles mountain range to the rear. The interior with its minimalist approach introduces warmth through texture, fabrics and surface finishes. The colour palette is neutral, counterbalanced with individual accent pieces.
