Work progresses on the largest solar bridge under the sun at London Blackfriars

Work is progressing well on a solar bridge above a platform at London’s Blackfriars Station, spanning the River Thames. Over 4,400 solar photovoltaic (PV) panels will be installed over the next few months with a completion date for the 6,000 sq m of PV panels due for mid 2012. Once the installation is complete Blackfriars will host London’s largest solar array and potentially the grandest scheme of its type in the world.

Chief Executive of Solarcentury (the solar engineering and installation firm behind the PV bridge), Derry Newman commented: “It’s fantastic to see this project finally come to fruition. Blackfriars Bridge is an ideal location for solar; a new, iconic large roof space, right in the heart of London.

“Station buildings and bridges are fixed parts of our urban landscape and it is great to see that this one will be generating renewable energy every day into the future. Unknown to most, there are many hundreds of buildings now powered by solar in the capital as investment in this technology increases. For people to see that solar power is working is a vital step towards a clean energy future.”

In total the PV panels at Blackfriars will generate an estimated 900,000kWh of electricity each year, providing 50% of the station’s energy and reducing CO2 emissions by an estimated 511 tonnes every year. Supporting the work of the solar array will be rain harvesting systems and sun pipes for the utilisation of natural lighting. Solarcentury are working with engineers Jacobs on the project.
