Carey Jones Architects' Transport Interchange in Doncaster, Yorkshire

At the heart of the Doncaster Town Centre regeneration scheme the Frenchgate Interchange is an integrated transport facility and shopping centre, as such the first of its kind in the country. The development includes 80,000 m2 of retail shopping space with a 30 stand bus and coach facility and connects directly to the National rail network. Over 5,000m2 of UGINOX AME stainless steel has been installed using the traditional standing seam technique. Traditionally used for roofing applications the standing seam technique is easily applied to cladding purposes. On this project the standing seam is installed using the single angle folded seam enhancing the flatness of the cladding. Situated at the heart of the historic town centre and creating a focal point the scheme was designed to be both striking and functional. Constructed from steel and pre-cast concrete, the striking façade of the building features an interesting use of hard metals providing a durable, low maintenance solution. The sweeping curved facades are clad using UGINOX AME stainless steel, answering perfectly the architects design. The selection of terne coated stainless steel with its ability to patinate to a dull grey was a major influence in the selection process thus ensuring there is harmony with the existing landscape. “UGINOX AME was chosen for the Frenchgate to evoke the traditional nature of finish and detailing in a modern sculptured form”, Barry Falkner, Architect from Carey Jones.
