Latest arm of Picturehouse chain now completed by Fletcher Priest Architects

A new addition to the UK’s largest independent cinema group has been completed by Fletcher Priest Architects in the colourful borough of Hackney, London. Hackney Picturehouse is located in a rejuvenated building formerly used as a live music venue which has been restored and invigorated by the inventive reuse of building materials and an injection of vivid colour.

The Fletcher Priest design team took a highly sustainable approach to the scheme, taking key elements of the existing complex and reusing them elsewhere or relocating them to another building in the Picturehouse chain. Acoustic panels were removed from the cinemas and bar areas and reinstated elsewhere in the Hackney cinema or Ritzy Picturehouse in Brixton. Frosted glazed panels formerly used as projection screens were replaced in a new art gallery space to form a back-lit light box wall.

Managing Director of CityScreen/Picturehouse Cinemas, Lyn Goleby explains: “Our aim is to make the Hackney Picturehouse a really vibrant local community cinema that will become one of the linchpins of cultural activity in the centre of the borough, very much like sister cinemas in the circuit - The Ritzy in Brixton and the Clapham Picturehouse - offering a rich mix of mainstream and specialised film, music and other locally centred activity.”

To this end the facility is not limited to showcasing popular and independent films. The 4,000 sq m venue offers extensive space for community-based organisations and arts-related companies alongside its series of luxury-seated film auditoria, bars and cafes. Jules Pipe, Mayor of Hackney comments: “This is a really positive boost for the local area and will be warmly welcomed when it opens for business.”
