First LEED Platinum building in Northern Europe completed by Arkitema Architects
Danish practice Arketima Architects has completed the first building in Northern Europe to achieve the inspirational LEED Platinum certification, joining an elite list of approximately 150 commercial buildings in the world which have accomplished this feat.
The 22,500 sq m complex is a new office facility for global wind turbine company Vestas in Aarhus, Denmark with a design fitting of the sustainable energy firm. Named ‘House of Vestas’ the building has been devised with Denmark’s largest geo-thermal installation and only uses around 50% of the energy needed by a generic commercial complex.
A dark swathe on the Aarhus skyline, House of Vestas is transformed as night falls by coloured lights which enliven the panelled façade adding a new dimension to the form. Internally users enter into a central atrium - the finishings of which experiment with various textures - off which all functions are located.
Within this central void are two stone volumes which function as meeting centres for the entire building. Flexible walls have been installed throughout House of Vestas which enable employees to transform their working environment into spaces that work for them, easily adapting the internal volumes without changing the technical installations.
