Studio Egret West's catalyst project Surrey Canal: London's Sporting Village approved

The London Borough of Lewisham has granted planning permission for a large-scale city development by Studio Egret West entitled Surrey Canal: London’s Sporting Village, subject to approval by the GLA and completion of a legal agreement.

Located on Lewisham’s north-eastern perimeter, the 9.4ha site is bordered on two sides by railway embankments and viaducts, drastically restricting its permeability. Studio Egret West’s concept suggests taking advantage of nearby and proposed railway stations and creating a ‘city within a city’ as a catalyst for widespread regeneration of the area.

Key features of this design include the realisation of major indoor sports and health facilities to shape the community and provide a series of identifiable features for the region. These include football, cricket, tennis and basketball facilities, a church, wellness centre and family clinic.

Speaking on the recent planning permission Mark Taylor, Development Director at developers Renewal commented: “This decision is an important step in our plans to create a new and exciting piece of London at Surrey Canal, Lewisham. This will provide significant benefits for the local area including a new station at Surrey Canal Road, 2,000 new jobs, up to 2,400 new homes, improved connections and a new park.

“Our proposals will also create an improved setting for Millwall FC and a regional sports centre for London to serve the local community, as well as elite sportsmen and women.”
