DMJM Design scores LEED gold by utilizing a holistic approach for two multi-use structures

Before the groundbreaking even took place, sustainability was a high priority for the design and construction of the Lincoln and Edmunds buildings at Pomona College with LEED silver certification being the ultimate goal. After submitting the final reports to the USGBC, the 92,300 square foot facilities were certified gold, the second highest rating that can be earned. Dedicated in March 2007, multiple disciplines of education including geology, psychology, linguistic/cognitive sciences, computer science, environmental science, neuroscience and the intercollegiate department are housed within the two interconnected buildings. DMJM’s design objective was to create an efficient and user-friendly space supporting the numerous areas of study incorporating classrooms, laboratories and shared-use spaces standardized in terms of size and organized to allow future reconfiguration as the departments grow and change. The clustering of disciplines related to the science of the mind is intended to create synergies and facilitate collaboration. Departments also will benefit from lounge spaces designed to foster a sense of community among students.
