Stanton Williams' flagship store at Cabot Circus in Bristil is due to complete this autumn

Architects Stanton Williams have created a landmark building for the Bristol Alliance’s £500m Cabot Circus development. The dramatic £22m department store for House of Fraser seeks to integrate with the city. The Bristol Alliance is a joint venture between Land Securities and Hammerson. The 170,000 sq ft building, will become one of Bristol’s most recognised landmarks. Occupying a high profile position at the eastern tip of the site, it is the very first building visible on approaching Bristol’s city centre. Stanton Williams have created a signature building of powerful visual interest. The design solution was to create a sculpturally strong urban but earthly form, dramatically inspired by shifting tectonic blocks or plates. The solid stone volumes are broken up by geological ‘faults’ between each mass, with glazed panels or lighting in between. The sumptious detailing of the bronze panels and etched glass by one of the UK’s foremost artists, Susanna Heron, will provide a rich visual experience at pedestrian level, with the subtly textured skin of the building presenting a final intriguing layer. The exterior cladding comprises a sensuous palette of organic, tactile materials including Portland stone embedded with real fossils, figured bronze panels, and shimmering hand carved glass. A cathedral-sized glass window has been designed so that light streaming into the building creates a dynamic, and constantly changing, series of shapes and shadows as an intrinsic feature of the interior wall design. Joint letting agents for the scheme are DTZ and Lunson Mitchenall. Overall scheme masterplanners are Chapman Taylor. Main contractors are Sir Robert McAlpine. The project was handed over in October 2007 and work has begun on the fitting out. The building is due for completion in autumn 2008.
