du Toit Allsopp Hillier / du Toit Architects Ltd design the Wychwood Green Arts Barns
Artscape and the City of Toronto are transforming the historic Wychwood TTC streetcar repair barns located in the St. Clair and Bathurst neighbourhood into the Green Arts Barns.
The site has great potential to create a community that foster arts and culture, environmental leadership, heritage preservation, urban agriculture and affordable housing. The Studio Barn will provide 26 live/work studios, 15 work-only studios for professional artists and a space to exhibit work for both local and professional artists. This will provide an opportunity for artists to connect with their neighbourhood. The Covered Street Barn provides of a series of affordable community spaces for arts, exhibitions and festivals to allow vendors to create an economic hub in the community. The Community Barn will be a place that provides affordable office and meeting areas, as well as rehearsal spaces for community arts and environmental organizations. The Green Barn is a greenhouse, sheltered garden and outdoor bake oven. These four components will be complemented and surrounded by a newly restored park.
The Green Arts Barns will be a creative place, a home where new ideas flourish, an environment rich with diversity and cultures, a solution for affordable housing and communities.
