Monumental iconic venue designed by HKS Inc to celebrate Liverpool football
The 2005 Champions’ League winners, Liverpool Football Club, unveiled plans for a 60,000-seat stadium for the “Reds” at Anfield Stadium in Stanley Park. The club’s owners are Americans Tom Hicks and George Gillett and the architect is Dallas, Texas-based architectural giant HKS working through their London office.
The new stadium will increase the existing capacity from 45,000 to 60,000 seats, within a design that will endorse its status as one of the world’s most successful football clubs.
The entire architectural composition is generated by and from the Kop – the world famous single raking stand set behind the home goal. The Kop hosts Liverpool’s most die-hard fans, whose passion and total loyalty is expressed by chanting and singing. The all-seater stand, set at the high point of the site, will contain some 20,000 seats – a huge increase in scale. The architecture of the Kop is highly expressive, the roof over being supported by a massive proscenium arch which is in turn supported by slender raking columns flanking the stand at its southern corners. Such a setting can only serve to further intensify the sense of drama through the obvious theatrical references to the Kop as a stage.
