Ingenious private residence on triangular site completes in Leiden, Netherlands
As part of an eleven-project series, Pasel Kuenzel Architects has now completed this elegant private residence in the Dutch university city of Leiden. Entitled V12K0102, the 30m long home is two storeys high and is composed of two residential volumes positioned end to end; one unit is designed for adults, the other for children.
Despite physically separating the adults from the children, Pasel Kuenzel Architects has maintained a visual connection through wide panes of glass and a series of intimate, shared courtyards. All living, dining and recreational spaces are designed for communal use and are located on the ground floor. Natural daylight pours into these areas through long windows, set in bands across the gleaming white external walls.
The site itself is almost triangular in shape and was once home to a slaughterhouse in an inner-city housing development, forcing the architects to be creative. Pasel Kuenzel Architects consider the project ‘a new interpretation of the classical Dutch housing typology’.
