Contemporary primary school replaces original Victorian institution in Woolwich, UK

The brand new St Mary Magdalene Church of England Primary School building in Woolwich was officially opened by the Bishop of Southwark on 17th July. Funded under the Department for Education (DfE) targeted capital and primary capital programme initiatives, the striking four storey building incorporates ‘playdecks’ to enable children to safely play and learn over several floors and replaces the Victorian primary school that originally occupied the site.

The £7.5m project, was designed and managed by Bromley based Architects, Interior Designers and Project Managers Pellings LLP, and built by contractors Lakehouse. The requirement to rebuild a school on its own site and latterly increase the school from one form entry to two forms entry was the inspiration behind the innovative four storey design.

The result is a remarkably unique building, housing 14 classrooms and a nursery, which enables children to utilise outside space safely on three of the four levels of the building. With just a swell increase in the original site area, the school has been built to meet the requirements of Building Bulletin 99 (BB99) whilst remaining at the heart of its urban community, as well as incorporating sustainable features such as green roofs, PV panels and grey water recycling. As a result, the building is BREEAM rated Very Good.

"Lakehouse and Pellings worked so hard together, to give us the best primary school in the country." said Claire Harrison, Head teacher at the School. During the 15 month long construction period, children were bussed to and from a temporary school on another site. The planning and programming of the temporary school was also project managed by Pellings LLP.
