Stadium precint creates an enduring legacy for Durban

The Moses Mabhida Stadium and Precinct is regarded as an iconic project for the City of Durban in South Africa. The stadium was developed for the 2010 World Cup soccer tournament. The design of the stadium and precinct was undertaken by the iBola Lethu Consortium with the lead urban designers responsible for the design of the precinct being IYER Urban Design Studio. Working within a multidisciplinary team, IYER have produced a precinct that not only accommodated the needs of the 2010 event, but which leaves a legacy for current and future residents of the city.

This is achieved through a carefully crafted and contemporary design that emphasises public-ness and multifunctionality. The urban design is based on a integrated public space system including a series of well-made and distinct public spaces, both hard and soft, with a legible network of pedestrian priority streets and promenades that link the precinct with its surrounding urban context. The design is based on a contemporary approach to landscape design, executed on a large scale with a notable continuity in design approach and aesthetic. A distinguishing feature of the urban design is the emphasis placed on the public environment, in terms of scale and quality, resulting in its ongoing use and sustainability of the precinct.

IYER have been awarded the highest award of commendation from the Institute of Landscape Architects of South Africa, the Presidents Award, in 2011. The Institute noted in its citation that: "The landscape around the stadium manages not to be overwhelmed by the scale of this striking edifice which is no mean feat. Its designers have been confident enough to provide generous open spaces, and demonstrate a fitting restraint in detailing and material specification. The result is a bold and sophisticated setting for the stadium with a contemporary, world-class feel."
