ikon.5 architects was awarded a 2007 New Jersey AIA Design Award for SUNY New Paltz Student Union Building
Inspired by the regional landscape of the Catskills, the addition and renovation to the student union building at the State University of New York in New Paltz is a glazed landscape of exploration and discovery. Sited between two existing concrete brutalist structures, the glass addition provides an illuminating central focus to the campus. The addition is a welcoming gateway to the university as seen from the main public through way to the campus.
Beneath the sloping glazed forms is a campus commons, the living room for the New Paltz community. Internally, the north wall of the existing student union building opens up on to the new campus commons and a three story atrium. The atrium permits visual and physical access to the three public floors of the Student Union Building.
The program includes a 15,000 SF Addition, a 13,000 SF Renovation to include a campus commons, meeting rooms, lounges, bookstore, and a cafe. The anticipated completion date is January 2010.
