Shelters provide unique identity for communities

Located in northern Colorado along the front range of the Rocky Mountains, Fort Collins is a thriving city that has been recognised as one of top cities to live in America. In large part this is due to residents' keen interest in civic project that will improve their quality of life. The Mason Corridor Bus Rapid Transit System is an example of this.

The BRT system has been integrated into the city’s master plan to improve overall access, mobility and circulation for commuters who travel along the busy corridor. The system will connect the existing Downtown Transit Center located in a historic building in the city’s historic district, travel through Colorado State University campus, continue through emerging new communities and terminate at a new contemporary South Transit Center.

Twelve new stations are planned along the corridor. The goals of the station design are to reflect local context, values such as sustainable design and act as a catalyst for future development in the station area. The design team has accomplished this by creating a shelter design that allows for customisation of an 'ICON' component at each station location. The function of the ICON is as an enclosure for fare collection and communications equipment. By creating a unique appearance at each station, the ICON is transformed to an element that defines the character of the shelter and integration into the community. The other elements of the shelter include a stainless steel structure, glass roof and windscreens.

The design also incorporated 'Art in Public Places', which is intended to encourage and enhance artistic expression and appreciation and to add value to the Fort Collins community through acquiring, exhibiting and maintaining public art. Art has been integrated into glass panels at each station, and reflects the history and culture of the area. The shelters are designed by the IBI Group, while the public art is by Robert Tulley.
