SBA designs China's first major low carbon business district

Situated at the busiest HUB of the Chinese East Coast, the first Low-Carbon Business Center of this size is being planned. China's goal for the future is a reduction of the CO2-emissions by 45%. To achieve this target various programs are being developed by the Chinese government, which should solve the environmental problems in long-term. One of these programs is the international tender for the Low-Carbon Business District, Shanghai / Hongqiao.

SBA won the international competition with a sustainable concept that comprised an urban ecological design. The Low-Carbon Business Center is defined by the sustainable design elements of urban planning and urban design, traffic planning, building technologies and energy production. In the early planning stages these parameters were analysed, evaluated and integrated in the overall master planning. The design goals were defined by planning standards and guidelines and will be realised in a team together with architects, energy and facility planners, specialists for building technologies, traffic planners and landscape architects as well as the urban planning institute.

The particular location offers an ideal condition for a new business district near by new airport Shanghai-Hongqiao, the traffic hub and the proximity to the city center of Shanghai. The location, with a total area of 1.4 km2, is marked by a green pedestrian axis, with direct connection to the HUB. A special aspect is the eco-friendly design of public space. Walkability, bicycle-traffic, E-mobility, shady planting, square design and lighting concepts give this 'Urban Platform' its special quality. Green roofs and green courtyards inside the plots and the office units, reflect the concept of a micro-climate design and are enriched by public functions for daily demand.

To meet the requirements of an energy-reducing and controlling district, an innovative planning tool was developed for reducing the CO2-emissions and their effect control, together with the University of Duisburg-Essen within a research project. The energy consumption will be established by a sensor technology and the information will be stored by a computer-based monitoring system for a long-term evaluation Since 2010, the plots are disposed with strict regulations for sustainable constructions in the regulatory planning and the architectural concepts for the individual blocks will be evaluated.
