Newcastle International Airport has today announced plans for the construction of an £8.2 million control tower on the airport grounds. The new 43 metre high control tower has been designed by REID architecture, following an industry competition, with structural and engineering work to be completed by Arup. The team has proposed a single tower construction of circular plan form. The tower expands to encompass the high level of accommodation in an integrated unit at the top and splays out to house the base building facilities in a unified geometry at the bottom. Construction work is expected to commence in March 2006 and finish December 2007.
