Carter + Burton Architects complete the Shenandoah Retreat in Virginia

The Shenandoah Retreat sits on a steep ledge with views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Two scientists built this house as a respite from the city. It is nestled with the site creating interstitial spaces linking with the natural setting. The concrete tower and entry bridge separate the public from private spaces, while an open plan creates a minimalist aesthetic. Built-ins provide efficient use of space, and closet walls on the north side with movable art panels provide a thermal buffer. A screened porch pavilion, concrete grill center and spa anchor the exterior spaces. Energy savings come from a passive design, a geothermal heat pump, radiant heating and a Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) envelope which provides a thin roof profile. This Eco-modern house blends regional craft and universal technologies.
