Melbourne design team to develop new public transport system for Nanjing
Nanjing Department of Tourism and Conservation has appointed CK Designworks to devise a masterplan to rejoin the Purple Mountain - the final resting place of centuries of emperors - and Xuanwu Lake, the historical Centre of Nanjing. The planed reunification is based on ICOMOS principles: places of cultural significance should be conserved; necessary change must retain cultural significance; changes must be reversible; new work should be readily identifiable as such.
The UNESCO World Heritage Listed Purple Mountain and Xuanwu Lake precinct, including the ancient city walls, attract millions of tourists every year. At present the infrastructure is solely dependent on roads. Left unchecked, heavy buses and cars will destroy the delicate environment of the region.
CK Designworks and ERM have worked with Dopplemayr to resolve a complete public transport network including cable car ropeways, automated people movers (cable trams) and electric busses which will interact with the existing public metro system, as well as new large car parks including some which will be retrofitted into existing disused buildings.
At the peak of the mountain and adjacent to the imperial astronomy college, complete with observatory equipment some 600 years old, visitors centres that include tourist amenities and learning centres will be developed to facilitate deep appreciation of the wonders of the old capital, while the ropeway system will provide fantastic views of the old and new city.
