CK Designworks design a new city in China
CK Designworks was commissioned by the Nanjing Pukou regional government of the Peoples’ Republic of China to carry out a strategic master plan of approximately 20 sq km of residential, commercial, industrial and rural land. The brief called for a 'cutting edge' approach to the master planning of the area.
Mythology is an important part of Chinese culture, so a story was developed which drew together the important elements of this area; its history, the Nanjing river pebbles, the peacock butterfly, two mountains and a river. The 'Nanjing Story' formed the central focus for the master planning of the site, the principle buildings and the building design guidelines. This story provides an early understood philosophy which can be easily imparted to developers and authorities.
CK designworks together with sub-consulant ERM Melbourne ensured that the master plan and buildings were designed to the latest international LEED standards with large areas zoned for parks, gardens and recreational areas, creating state-of-the-art places to work, live and play. Starting with the hub building development radiated out in ripples. Buildings are soft and textured like butterflies and pebbles.
Major buildings are reminiscent of the splashes created by pebbles in a river and refurbishment of existing older commercial buildings is achieved by fitting multi coloured screens in the form of butterflies. Large areas of open space have been achieved by the inclusion of multi-storey factory buildings, designed to house light industrial manufacturing.
