Five-star hotel forms centrepiece of new Linyi master plan by Coffey Architects

The client, a private developer of Shandong Province, requested a masterplan that would be a landmark for Linyi. A composition with a relationship to the river that would allow the perceived value of the 5 star hotel, the anchor building of the site, to increase the value of the other property on the site. The resultant scheme is Carve.

Carve sets an urban stage by creating a carved citadel, a topography that creates an instantly recognisable place for living with low rise / low density housing to the side. The five star hotel, residential towers and the individual homes all enjoy the same carved forms of different scales and functions, the individual buildings feel as though they have been hewn from a large piece of rock giving a sense of permanence, cohesion and spatial tension.

The serviced apartments and apartments are carved from the hill with materiality and landscape of a glacial scale. The Tower, which houses the five star hotel guest rooms, is a 'found fragment' emerging from the citadel, a special object connected to this carved landscape. Within the landscape the hotel functions are located with grand halls and circulation spaces allowing access to a green roof with spectacular views to the south and west over the river.

Carve is expressive of its form and creation through its materiality. The individual buildings of the hotel, serviced apartments and apartment blocks are carved from granite of two types; a bush-hammered granite that 'sucks' light, and a polished granite that reflects light. The resultant facade is expressive of having been cut in a diamond mine.
