Educational Secretary announces new £2bn plans to replace £55bn BSF programme

The UK Education Secretary Michael Gove today announced new plans to partially replace the scrapped £55bn Building Schools for the Future programme with a £2bn privately funded scheme. Speaking in the House of Commons, Gove explained that the programme will be open to all schools, local authorities and academies in the UK who will be able to apply for funding from today.

Priority will be given to the most rundown schools with the intention to open 100-300 new education facilities by September 2014. Referring to earlier private financing initiatives run by the government, Gove detailed: “I am determined that criticisms of the previous model for private financing must be addressed and I will only agree to projects when a series of rigorous value for money tests have been passed.”

During his speech Gove also noted that six local authorities which took him to court after they lost out in the dissolution of the BSF programme will not have their building projects reinstated.
