BDP to design 15 sq km masterplan in China
BDP has been awarded the prestigious Hua’An County City Masterplan covering an area of 15 square kilometres. Hua’An County is a World Heritage Site and National Forest area of outstanding natural beauty in Southern Fujian Province. The project will be run from BDP’s London studio with planning input from Manchester and the involvement of the expanding Shanghai studio.
The six month project will involve developing a sustainable city masterplan in a sensitive setting for a population of 160,000 people that also maximises the tourist potential of the city. The underutilised Jiulong river loops around the site creating great potential for water based recreation.
The area is famous for its jade and tea production, forest bamboo stands and the ancient ’Toulou’ or round houses that once contained up to 600 people in one clan. BDP’s Urbanism group was selected for its understanding of Chinese culture, its dynamic and innovative design approach, and experience of large scale complex masterplans.
