Formroom Architects submits plans for student accommodation development

Manchester-based Formroom Architects, has submitted plans for a new development of high specification student accommodation in Birmingham. The site for the proposed scheme is located in the Aston are of the city directly adjacent to the £40m 656-room Bagot Street student development, also designed by the Manchester practice, which is due for completion next month.

The development has again been commissioned by Liverpool property developer, Iliad. The site will comprise 492 bedrooms including 70 studio rooms arranged as two blocks ranging between 11 and 16 storeys with fantastic views across the City of Birmingham and the neighbouring canal. The proposed site will also feature over 5,000 sq ft of retail space on the ground floor with new public realm, to help create a community hub and enhance commercial enterprises in the area.

Modernist in design, the building facades will be clad in contrasting fluttering colours that refract and alter in the changing light, drawing upon the site’s history as a former manufacturing site for the adjacent jewellery quarter.

Formroom’s managing director, Tim Groom, comments: “The first development at Bagot Street set a new standard of quality and sold out within two weeks but for this second phase we all wanted to raise the bar again in terms of specification and design. This second phase features new interiors and more of a boutique hotel style which should impress even the most discerning of students. The development really exemplifies the next generation of contemporary student accommodation.”

Planning approval is expected in the autumn of 2011, with work starting on site by the end of the year for a 2013 opening.
