Centerbrook Architects house in western Massachusetts
This house in western Massachusetts is built into a hillside on a 40-acre site in the Berkshire Mountains. Capturing views of the verdant valley below and mountains beyond was a key factor in its design. Another factor was renovating and encompassing within the new residence a smaller house that came along with the site. The resulting unified structure steps down the hill and forms a sunny courtyard protected from the wind. Interior themes include display of the owners’ collection of art and antiques, views from one space through another down to the valley below, and movement up and down a series of stairs connecting a chain of spaces that follows the slope of the hill.
