Piers Gough speaks exclusively to WAN about the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition he curated with Alan Stanton

Since 1769, London’s Royal Academy of Arts has opened its doors each year to a Summer Exhibition, drawing together works from principal and unknown designers across the spectrum of the creative arts to offer professionals and amateur art lovers the opportunity to peruse a compilation of the most captivating productions that year.

The Architecture Room has become an essential constituent of this annual event, with high profile industry figures invited to lend a seasoned hand to its curation. This year it was the turn of CZWG architect and WAN juror Piers Gough and Alan Stanton of Stanton Williams, whose inventively crafted exhibition is now open to the public and will run until 15th August, supported by an engaging series of lectures and seminars.

The two architects have transformed the blue-grey room (a canny reflection of the hues of the London sky) by inserting four curved plinths which have been adorned by models of ambitious new structures set at jaunty angles. In lowering the expected height of these platforms, Gough and Stanton have enabled visitors to explore the concepts on a more intimate basis and have balanced the focus equally between the 2D and 3D exhibits.

Piers Gough took a few minutes to talk WAN through the newly open Architecture Room of the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts.
