Versatile panel system proves effective across a wide range of applications

TEXO® is a revolutionary, patented, pre-stressed panel system which delivers all the benefits of the latest architectural fabrics in a form that can be easily incorporated into mainstream construction.

TEXO® consists of an aluminium extrusion frame system which can be clad with a huge variety of solid and mesh fabric types. An elastomeric strip attached to the fabric performs like a spring and ensures the fabric is constantly held in pre-tension whatever the environment. This results in an extremely lightweight permanent cladding solution and massively reduces the loads transmitted to the primary structure compared to traditional tensile fabric engineering principals.

Evolution of the system has created new extrusions which carry a double fabric skin, and also create a 'lightbox' option. The next phase of TEXO® development will add photovoltaic fabric for façades and roofs; further strengthening the product's environmental credentials.

TEXO® applications

TEXO® was used to achieve the aesthetic and performance vision for the Shanghai World Expo 2010 UBPA pavilion B3-2 (image 1). The brief stipulated an uninterrupted rectangular space 78m x 28m; however, the architect wanted to avoid the prospect of an uninteresting ‘box'. A TEXO® envelope with translucent fabric and curved surfaces created a natural ‘soft box' effect. The 3D window surround was made possible by adapting the TEXO® manufacturing process to incorporate an inner frame which attaches to the windows set back within the façade.

Effective Brise Soleil solutions are increasingly important in keeping building energy consumption to a minimum. Deichmann stores (image 3) used the TEXO® system to overclad glass curtain walling and reduced its energy consumption by over 40%.

In the case of refurbishment of older buildings a lightweight solution is paramount because the cladding has to attach to the existing structure. TEXO®, at 4.0kgs/m2, can transform the building aesthetic and thermal properties (image 4).

Planning sensitive design and speed of construction are often a requirement. No less for Sainsbury's supermarket who needed to quickly build a multi-storey car park in an urban area subject to strict planning specification. The solution: massive TEXO® panels carrying a printed mesh fabric with 2000m2 installed in 15 days (image 5). TEXO® ETFE panels created a 900m2 roof as an alternative to glass at Samworth Academy (image 6).

Confidence

TEXO® is certified as ‘external wall textile façade cladding panels' by CSTB of Paris and over 50,000m2 has been installed to date.
