RMJM designs $3bn commerical project for Gazprom Group in St Petersburg

Plagued by negative press for their economic problems, RMJM have just announced some positive news. The firm has been appointed to design a $3bn commercial project for the Gazprom Group in St Petersburg, comprising the company’s headquarters, retail and leisure facilities, and a number of residential units. RMJM first began working with the Gazprom Group five years ago when the location for the tower was set for Okhta district of St Petersburg and the structure was intended to stand at 396m.

After several revisions the St Petersburg office of RMJM is now considering several options for a renewed site in Lakhta, one of which is a 426m high tower featuring 330,000 sq m of internal space which draws upon the neighbouring landscape including the 18th century palaces of Peterhof and Tsarskoe Selo. The proposed concept shows fluid motions clearly inspired by the stunning water gardens, cascades and fountains displayed at these regal monuments.

The new location for the Gazprom Group Headquarters is a 17 hectare brownfield site on the edge of St Petersburg, formerly used for the industrial storage of sand. RMJM are looking to transform this reclaimed land by creating a highly sustainable tower which ‘is a city-scale landmark that is designed to complement the historical spires of Peter and Paul Cathedral and the Admiralty’. The highly sustainable concept includes an ‘intelligent’ double outer skin to minimise heat loss in the freezing Russian winters, and a mechanical, electrical and plumbing system that reduces energy and water usage and lowers carbon dioxide emissions.

Reports have surfaced recently that Müller BBM, a German acoustic consultancy, are reluctantly suing RMJM for €100,000 of unpaid fees and have halted their design works on the Gazprom project as a result. When WAN questioned the practice on the topic, a spokesman stated: “This is a commercial matter that is related to the quality of delivery. Although RMJM cannot discuss matters subject to confidentiality agreements, we share Müller BBM’s desire to resolve this issue in a timely and appropriate manner.”
