Denton Corker win Sir Zelman Cowen Award

ANZAC Hall, the new exhibition gallery at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, designed by architects Denton Corker Marshall, has won the most prestigious architectural prize for public buildings in Australia: the Sir Zelman Cowen Award.Speaking about the building, the RAIA judges said, “The materials of stone, concrete, metal and glass meld well with the heritage qualities of the existing building and the powerful and contemporary form of the new building complements the old. Interior spaces provide a compelling audiovisual experience within a dark and mysterious envelope and the discipline of clear planning and detailing makes this a memorable project.” This is the third Denton Corker Marshall building to have won the Sir Zelman Cowen Award. The two previous winners include Melbourne Museum (2001) and the Melbourne Exhibition Centre (1996). The announcement was made on 27/10/05
