Second extension project at John F. Kennedy Presidential Library declared open

A new $30m wing of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston, Massachusetts opened to the public on 5th May. The 30,000 sq ft expansion includes 15,000 sq ft of archival storage, an additional classroom, a staging area for exhibits and curatorial work, and a new temporary exhibit gallery.

The new wing was designed by Boston-based architect Einhorn Yaffee Prescott, which has designed other projects for the National Archives Administration. Tom Putnam, director of the JFK Presidential Library said: “This new addition ensures that the Library has museum quality conditioned spaces to protect and preserve the treasures from John F. Kennedy’s life and times and creates new opportunities to engage the public in the story of his historic presidency.”

At the building’s dedication, which was attended by the slain president’s daughter, Caroline Kennedy, the curatorial staff of the Library presented a rocking chair used by President Kennedy at Camp David as the first artifact to be moved into the new wing. The remaining 20,000 artifacts in the Museum Collection have been stored in an offsite facility and will now be moved back to the Kennedy Library. Following the formal proceedings, guests and members of the media were given a tour of the new space by Library Director Tom Putnam and Library staff.

This is the second time the Library has been expanded. The Library and Museum were designed by architect I.M. Pei. Since it opened in October, 1979, more than 7 million visitors from around the world have visited the national memorial to President John F. Kennedy. The library averages more than 200,000 visitors each year.
