Mauro Turin Architectes carefully balances architectural threads in structural composition for a private residence

Switzerland-based design studio Mauro Turin Architectes has taken second place in an invited competition to design a private residence in Saint-Sulpice. Spread over a floor area of 1,150 sq m is an artistic concept compared by the architect to a house of cards.

Mauro Turin clarifies: “A unique element – a beam – which, multiplied with positions precisely defined in space, is bound in an inseparable way with the precedent and in the following one. There is no element in excess, and no element missing; every position is defined by the gravitational logic.”

The design of the residence relates directly to its site location – with a forest on one side and a lake at the front – by a centrifugal rotation of multiple horizontal strands which move vertically to counterbalance one another.

These alternating beams reach equilibrium in a descending spiral ‘so that the following sequence of pieces supports the precedent sequence in an act of four phases’. Space between each of the threads traps light and air, creating a constantly altering shadow projection.
