Steven Holl and Chris McVoy to create sustainable Doctorate's Building in Bogota
This angular white volume for the National University of Colombia by Steven Holl and Chris McVoy builds upon the architectural foundations laid down by designer Leopold Rother in the 1930s.
Rother’s original masterplan is measured around a green centre, classical axiality, and layered concentricity, however Steven Holl Architects clarifies: “We envision the new Doctorate’s Building re-energising the original master plan, shaping campus green space. While buildings of the 1970s clogged the inner green of the original master plan, our new building aims to turn that closure inside out, re-establishing green space definitions.”
Spread over 6,400 sq m, the pure white building is comprised of an auditorium with capacity for 600 seated guests, a cantilevered restaurant with various roof terraces overlooking the scenic mountainous ridges nearby, an ‘upside down’ section shaping a grotto water garden, and a quiet reflecting pool of rain- and grey-water which emits the sound of trickling water.
This sustainable water system is powered by a host of photovoltaic cells on the building’s roof which also provide 15% of the facility’s electricity. Materials used within the build will be reinforced concrete, local wood products and Botoga stone.
