Schwieger Architekten completes high-security psychiatric hospital in Thüringen

The ‘Ökumenische Hainich Klinikumg GmbH Mühlhausen' is a new building for the Free State of Thuringia comissioned under §63 StGB; a German criminal code which required the construction of Mühlhausen Hospital, a high-security mental health hospital.

Mühlhausen Hospital consists of five wards where there are 80 mentally-ill patients. There is a high level of security in the complex which is integrated with high-quality health care. The building is constructed in a triangular ring shape; situated in each corner are staircases. A green courtyard is located in the centre of the ring. The extension of the construction arrangement amounts to circa 76 m. The external building is approx. 240 m with a building depth of circa 14.5 m.

The construction consists of 3 full floors. On the ground floor there is the central entrance area, diagnostics, therapy and administration as well as a social sector with library, ergo therapy and a school. On the two upper floors are five wards. They have a residential feel about them. Every ward has living spaces, common rooms and treatment rooms. The body of the building was partly built with a cellar which includes an occupational therapy room and a gym, including a weights room, exercise room and a recreation area.

The outdoor area consists of a grass sports ground for ball games. Resting places and a barbecue area are situated at the edge of a small pond, which is secured by large security devices.

The building and the grounds create a comfortable living area for the  patients, many of whom will be based there for long periods of time. It is not just about making things comfortable for them, but also an important prerequisite for their recovery. It was also vital to integrate the level of security required without being too imposing.
