Shatotto’s concept design compliments the surrounding National Paliment Complex designed by Louis I. Kahn
This extension of Islamia Eye Hospital project is a competition entry. The site for the hospital is located near by to the National Parliament Complex of Bangladesh designed by Louis I. Kahn. Here, Louis I. Kahn's approach for the overall parliament complex, particularly the assembly building, has been taken in the scheme as a 'basics'.
The 'Celestial Square' of the Parliament building has been shifted to the site as a 'transferred square' through a 'transitional square'. Facing west is the unique challenge for the site, which has been taken care of softly, with poetic intuition, without losing its visual connections. Here, the project is interplayed with concrete, water and green - rejoicing Kahn and romancing with the sun
Bangladesh is a country of six seasons with its unique subtle and substantial variations. The use of persistent sun and harvesting the monsoon rain for the water body in front has been willfully taken into account to make the scheme responsive to the climate.
Considering the city Dhaka is under a seismic zone 2, a 22' x 22' structural grid has been selected. Here the intertwining of RCC column with load bearing shear walls support the floor slabs forming the total architectural expression of the building as transformation of rhythm.
Concrete is one of the most important and commonly used building materials in Bangladesh. Its level of permeability and sustainability with structural ability in combination is remarkable. Exposed concrete is here used as Kahn used in the parliament building, poetically.
