SmithGroup builds new facility in Arizona designed for future expansion

Banner Ironwood Medical Center is a 24-bed start-up facility with the ability to grow to 86 beds without any building expansion. Ultimately, the facility has been designed to grow to more than 500 beds with the incremental addition of nursing towers and expansion of the D&T. The initial building program includes a five-storey Nursing Tower and a two-storey Diagnostic & Treatment (D&T) block, which will house Imaging, Surgery and an 18-bay Emergency Department. The facility is initially designed for 86 acuity adaptable beds with the ability to support 144 total beds utilising the existing Ancillary and Diagnostic / Treatment chassis. Growth is pre-planned in multiple phases to over 500 beds without interruption in services.

The structure’s exterior design builds upon branding concepts established by Banner Health in their previously built facilities. Use of varying colours of ground-face and split-faced masonry, zinc metal panel accents, and EFIS provide the primary building materials. By incorporating glazing and solar shading elements, the design ensures abundant natural light and provides exterior views from offices, patient spaces, meeting rooms, and all public areas while mitigating solar gain in the harsh desert climate. The building massing is designed to emphasise differences in building function through architectural expression while maintaining sensitivity to environmental concerns of the desert.

The design is based on a 'template' hospital model that SmithGroup has developed in conjunction with the Banner Health System, with an emphasis on future growth. Banner Ironwood Medical Center is the centerpiece of a 'Greenfield' medical campus intended to define a sense of community in this outlying region of the Phoenix Metropolitan area. The development of this medical facility provides much needed healthcare services in an underserved community and state, as well as it provides an economic boost to the community via the creation of new jobs.
