Historical artifacts and local artwork create an authentic Pittsburgh experience at the Fairmont

The hotel brings modern luxury intersecting Pittsburgh's commercial and cultural corridors. The 185-room hotel celebrates the city's industrial past and current art scene, revitalising downtown Pittsburgh.

The design team's task was to deliver an 'exceedingly' green hotel, showcasing artifacts excavated during construction and creating an authentic Pittsburgh experience. Guided by the theme 'Art and Industry', the design team created interiors that are reflective and respectful of the local community. The 202,000 sq ft hotel features a restaurant, bar, lobby lounge, a 77,000 sq ft spa and fitness centre and 12,000 sq ft meeting space, including a 6,000 sq ft divisible ballroom while guest rooms and suites are situated on the top ten floors of the 24-story-building taking advantage of the surrounding views of downtown Pittsburgh, Mount Washington, PNC ballpark and the Allegheny and Ohio Rivers.

The designers used local steel and glass details throughout the hotel and featured works by local artisans such as dramatic ballroom chandeliers and glass pendant fixtures in the lobby and bar. Strategic ‘homes' were created to showcase the 100% artwork by local Pittsburgh artists throughout the hotel including every guest room and suite. An 18-foot-tall organic wooden sculpture welcoming hotel guests at the entrance, adding an unexpected element in juxtaposition to the sleek modern lobby interior.

A unique project feature is the integration of historical artifacts, connecting the modern guest experience with a glimpse of what life was like on this site 150 years ago. The design team distributed these artifacts throughout ‘pause' points in the hotel, educating and entertaining guests as they wait for elevators, transition from lobby to bar or relax in their suites. At this LEED Gold certified hotel, the guests will broaden their hotel experience as modern luxury, sustainability, art, history and authenticity are all well blended.
