AECOM designs hospital that sets a standard for integrated cultural, educational and healing environments

Designed to be the centerpiece of Dubai Healthcare City’s Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Academic Medical Center, the 1.45-million-sq-ft University Hospital (UH) defines a standard of healthcare excellence for the Gulf region. The 400-bed hospital, designed to be adjacent and connected to Harvard Medical School Dubai Center, is differentiated by integrating education, patient care, research and culture.

UH aims to improve patient health and education, while being a catalyst for innovation. It is designed to contribute to the well-being of the overall community, and to offer a sustainable healthcare delivery model for the region. The design provides an image of modern healthcare technology fused with cultural traditions and the forms of traditional, regional architecture. A modern translation of a traditional screen pattern is interpreted into a fritted, double-skinned glass wall on the exterior of the building, which provides interior environmental comfort.

The design repeats and translates this screen pattern throughout the facility, linking the interior and exterior into one holistic architectural expression. In a seamless transition from the exterior to the interior, large scale public spaces give patients and visitors a clear sense of place within UH. Designed using a flexible structural and mechanical /electrical infrastructure, the facility can adapt to changing needs of patients, as well as future technology. This flexible chassis allows services, such as specialty clinics, to be located on one floor or distributed throughout the diagnostic & treatment building to meet changing patient care and education needs.

These unique planning characteristics extend to the bed tower where a large flexible floor plate supports changing bed arrangements based on nursing requirements and location of VIP and Royal Suites. Patient rooms have a flexible layout that supports all acuity configurations on all floors. Throughout hospital, natural light criss-crosses each floor connecting the indoors to the natural world, thereby promoting a healing environment for patients and their families and an open and professional environment for staff.
