America's first palliative care campus aims to reinvent healthcare
The HealthCare Chaplaincy (HCC) is a national leader in research, education and multi-faith patient-centered care. To improve the quality and efficiency of health care, the HCC is developing the world’s first spirit-centered enhanced assisted living community residence in New York City. Designed by FXFOWLE ARCHITECTS, HCC’s new campus will be the organisation’s premier national facility for palliative care, a comprehensive approach to treating serious illness, focuses on a patient’s physical, psychological and spiritual well-being.
The projected LEED Platinum Certified campus will include a 108-unit Enhanced Assisted Living Residence for persons with serious progressive illnesses; a geriatric and palliative care outpatient medical practice; as well as educational, research, clinical practice and administrative facilities. With its prominent location along Manhattan’s East River, the exterior form, detail, massing, the 180,000-sq-ft building’s overall architectural expression will be an iconic representation of the organisation’s aspirations.
A key strategy in the building’s realization is the incorporation of garden-facades on the south and west faces of the building. These provide a 'dialogue of green' with the East River and the existing green areas. The organic shape of the Chaplaincy reflects the nature of its riverside location as well as its focus on sustainability and its function as a ‘healing’ centre. The HealthCare Chaplaincy’s new campus will support the local community, but also serve as a national demonstration project for the healthcare industry.
