New hospital's 'lean' design yieds greater efficiency while being environmentally responsible

Established as a cornerstone facility in a heavily wooded site and part of a multi-use development, this hospital was designed to celebrate the cycle of life – connecting with the environment both inside and out – to create a place where people can be inspired, heal and grow. The hospital was designed to respond to the future context of a walkable, new-urbanist, multi-use development.

Siting of the structure and parking began with designating tree preservation park areas – to craft the experience and retain the character of the existing forest. The campus layout provides patients with views of a beautiful, tree-covered environment, with healing respite gardens and walking trails for patients and families to enjoy the parks. But, the hospital is more than just a beautiful campus. It’s designed to be operationally efficient, lean, affordable and sustainably responsible.

The goal of lean design infused with thoughtful manipulation of the human experience – both internal and external – is focused on providing an environment that maximises the potential for positive clinical outcomes. The hospital is approximately 25% smaller per licensed bed than the typical 100-bed hospital. Such large area efficiencies create operational and staff efficiencies by default. It is estimated that staff and patient walking distances, as well as patient transfer distances, will be reduced by 30% in key departments.

Furthermore, the ubiquitous views toward the forested surroundings, beautiful landscape design and warm interior finish out create an excellent environment to work in and to heal in. Small personal spaces – a comfortable seat next to a window, a niche with a chair and a table, or a bench under the post oak – are sprinkled throughout the facility. These environments provide the background for real healthcare of the mind, body and spirit and enhance the healing hands of hospital staff as a physical manifestation of their compassion.
