LAG Prichard’s new Hampton by Hilton looks to the future while acknowledging Liverpool’s maritime past

L.A.G. Prichard Architects have recently completed a £28m mixed-use development within the Baltic Triangle, Liverpool.

Due to the L.A.G. Prichard development this previously run-down industrial area has been transformed into a desirable location to live and stay when visiting the City.

Hampton by Hilton, part of the Hilton brand of hotels, took the decision to locate one of their first UK hotels on this site at a construction cost of £12m.

The underlying design principles have been to reflect the existing character and urban grain of the area by using the traditional materials of brick and slate, together with glazing, in a contemporary context. The limited palette of materials has resulted in a simple, refined series of buildings carefully sculpted from the brickwork and broken by the glazing. The Hotel building is set back from the road, standing on a newly created public realm, increasing its presence within the area.

The main body of the Hotel, constructed in brickwork, floats above and overhangs the 1½ storey glazed ground floor. This is a contemporary take on the traditional colonnades of the monolithic warehouse buildings constructed during the 1800s.

Planning concerns over the height of the building were addressed by constructing the top two floors of the hotel as a flush glazed box. This is separated from the brick mass below by a large shadow band and acts as a beacon when the rooms are lit up at night. The large double-height entrance lobby is surrounded by a galleried mezzanine creating a sense of drama not normally associated with a hotel in this rating band.

The bedrooms benefit from exceptional views of the City, particularly with the full-height glazing on the top floor.

Since its completion, the hotel has demonstrated the way in which a carefully considered architecture is capable of redefining a run-down area.
