Winning design for green and friendly hospital with 'the spirit of convalescence'

"A hospital for the well-being of the patients with an architecture that assists the healing process." Thus briefly describes the design of the Tianjin Airport International Hospital by the architectural office SBA design. As a part of the Tianjin Medical University, with a gross floor area of 152,860 sq m and a site area about 13.4 ha, the Tianjin Airport International Hospital is situated in an important residential area and provides health services for surrounding residents. The natural landscape is included into the design and therefore a green courtyard brings the landscape closer to the patient.

The design solution is a huge park and numerous roof gardens, like a 'Medical Park' to provide best conditions for the patients recovery; green space combined with lovely gardens where the patients as well as visitors and staff can relax. The recreation area is designed with tables, chairs, fountains and other facilities – to rest, watch, walk and for conversation. This concept puts patients, visitors and staff in close contact with fresh air and nature.

Besides the green concept, the human character and scale of the hospital is also evident in the interior. The concept provides single-bed rooms and hospital rooms for families. Reducing the patient’s sense of unfamiliarity and considering the psychological needs are basic principles of a human hospital. Comfortable ward spaces relieve the anxiety of patients, while individual spaces for public communication create a natural atmosphere by bringing the outer courtyard landscape into the interior space.

In the lobby and waiting rooms, plants and background music let the patients relax and help them forget their sickness for a while. The atrium improves daylighting and natural ventilation inside the building. An efficient pedestrian traffic system ensures better circulation for staff and patients. With about 1,500 beds for general care and VIP-care, as well as more than 6,000 outpatients per day, a comfortable and efficient working process must be guaranteed. Therefore a high standard of medical equipment and treatment is essential.

In cooperation with the architectural office M+P, the high technological standard required by such a hospital was effectively supported during the execution phase. A high-performance hospital where nature coexists with modern technology and a 'Low Carbon Design', including solar panels and several passive energy-saving technologies, should provide a sustainable infirmary. Landscaping, architectural expression and meeting patients' needs were driving forces in the Medical Park concept; each aspect supports the other to create a unified holistic and innovative hospital for healing.
